Before being colonized, Monteverde was inhabited by Corobici Indians. About 60 years ago nine Quaker families from the U.S founded the original community of Monteverde, as they sought a peaceful and natural place to live in.

One of the most famous reserves in Costa Rica is the Monteverde Cloud Forest, located at the peak of the continental divide.
