We are back in the very cold North (even a bit of snow last night) and think often of the glorious week in Costa Rica. One can list all the wonderful parts of that total vacation, but outstanding is the gracious hospitality you and your staff provide. We owe you a special note of appreciation for making our vacation a totally comfortable, aesthetic experience!

From our first email exchanges, I felt we were about to visit a world of great warmth and hospitality. Our experience was exactly that! Your hotel is charming, your meals unbelievably delicious, and the Conchal environment warm and beautiful. I miss the early morning cup of coffee ( yours is definitely better than my Starbucks!) , sitting by the pool with Rachel, Alfred and Joann, soon to be followed by your perfect breakfast upstairs. The sweetness of everyone there... at Conchal and beyond-- the extended hand, the kindnesses-- leave us with the warmest memories of our time in Costa Rica. You take the most wonderful care of your guests-- planning trips, lovely meals, and could we ever forget the birthday cake!-- and we thank you both with all our hearts. Have a wonderful season and hope to see you next year!

From the moment I booked my 1 nite stay @ Conchal Hotel, I was given assistance from that point on until our stay at the property and afterwards, if we needed assistance. Simon, our gracious host & Hilda, our lovely & wonderful hostess, helped us all the way from communicating to me via emails abt our upcoming trip, giving us directions to their place, helping to arrange our transportation from SJO airport to that area & even gave us their phone # & business card to call them the if we needed to the remainder of our stay in the area for pointers to go here, go there, points of interest or just whatever. My husband & I travel alot & never have we received such welcome & down home type treatment. We really appreciated them making us feel "welcome" and making us feel comfortable about our trip to their "homeland". We had some apprehension about renting a car & making the trip over to that area in a rental car (after reading reviews about tourist & rental cars) but Simon helped me make an informed decision & he gave me all the information I needed & he calmed my fears. Although we spent only 1 nite here before going to an all inclusive resort, the hotel is small, cozy, nice, clean & in a good location (close to a beach). The rooms are spacious, the bathroom is spacious & modern & we had a fridge in our room for cold drinks. There is free internet svc at the property for guests (although we did not use it). There is a security guard that watches the property & your car (if you rent one). The free continental breakfast was "a plus" and with the inexpensive room rate & the breakfast included in the price was "awesome". We purchased dinner that nite, I had the cajun shrimp pizza & my husband had grilled shrimp on shewers with rice & vegs. It was delicious - let's just say that Hilda "can cook"!! Let's just say that you will have no regrets if you book Conchal Hotel & the only regrets we had is that we did not stay longer. But we will definitely stay here for a day or two if we are ever back in the area. They are some good people that knows how to treat their guests "right" & they go over & beyond their guest's expections!! THANKS SIMON & HILDA - YOU ALL WERE GREAT TO US - WE APPRECIATED IT!!

“I would say the biggest delight for us was going from the massive Westin Conchal resort to the quaint and friendly Conchal Hotel. The lady working at Conchal Hotel was fantastic. We thought we'd be sad that we had to leave the all-inclusive luxury of the Westin, but her warmth made the Westin seem hollow. Good call on that hotel man.”

Wow is about all we could say about Conchal. We found this gem by surfing the internet and by what we read and seen by the photos, decided to book for the first 7 of our 15 nite stay. Needless to say, the photos on the internet are great, but of course do not do justice to the naked eye. Same with reviews, you really have to see this and experience for yourself to appreciate how sweet this quaint and lovely place is. And you can't even start to say how wonderful Simon and Hilda and each and every staff member they have are. Not to mention the food, service, beauty, gorgeous rooms, comfy comfy huge beds, one could go on and on. It seemed to us that you didn't really see anyone around yet if you needed something they magically appeared. If you go there you will see what we mean. Hilda and Simon and all of the staff carry about their business yet you rarely hear them and only catch a glimpse of them now and then, with a smile and a hello, and "do you need anything". After doing day trips to other nearby (and some not that nearby) beaches and towns, we decided nothing would really compare to where we were and asked if there was room for us to stay an additional 5 nights. Thankfully there was a room available and we had the luck of staying on. Simon and Hilda had great advice on beaches to see, restaurants, maps, a car rental to the rain forest, the monkey trail quad ride where we seen the monkeys, so so helpful. They even have a driver they call when we wanted to go see another beach, town, anything, he was always waiting for us at the agreed time to return to Conchal. He was very sweet and very reasonably priced, and also had advice on what to see and do in CR. We had a truly nice stay, and even with a little wild animal racket some nights. To us, it didn't matter, we're on holidays, we can nap later on the beach. The beauty of nature around was much more enjoyable than a concrete jungle could ever be. We have stayed at all-inclusive 5-stars, as well as quaint hotels, in other countries, and this is one we will that stands out among the crowd. We miss you all at the Conchal, and apologize for taking so long to write a review.

Please don't feed the wildlife!

Ten Reasons Not to Feed the Monkeys

You might find feeding the monkeys (and other wild animals) to be a thrilling experience, but you are not doing the monkeys a favor. In fact, you are actually harming them. Here’s why:

1.Monkeys are highly susceptible to diseases from human hands. They can die from bacteria transferred off your hand that has no ill effect on you.

2.Migration to human-populated areas to be fed increases the risk of dog attacks and road accidents.

3.Irregular feeding leads to an aggressive behavior towards humans and other species.

4.Contrary to the stereotype, bananas are not the preferred food of monkeys in the wild. Bananas, especially those containing pesticides, can be upsetting to the monkeys’ delicate digestive system and cause serious dental problems that can lead to eventual death.

5.Feeding creates a dangerous dependency on humans that diminishes the monkeys’ survival abilities.

6.Feeding interferes with the monkeys’ natural habits and upsets the balance of their lifestyle centered on eating wild fruits, seeds, small animals, and insects.

7.Contact with humans facilitates poaching and the trade in illegal wildlife.

8.Pregnant females who are fed nothing but bananas during their pregnancy will not give birth to healthy infants. The babies will be malnourished, or never develop to term, and die before birth.

9.Monkeys need to travel an average of 17 kilometers each day to be in good physical condition. If they know that food is available in a particular location, they will not leave that area.

10.Not only do we pass on diseases to animals when we feed them by hand, but they can pass diseases to us as well.

The monkeys do not realize any of this. Now YOU do. Don’t facilitate the extinction of one of Nature’s most amazing creatures for your own pleasure or financial gain. Please help save the monkeys by reporting anyone feeding the monkeys: 2777-2592. If you are feeding the monkeys, you now know why you should stop. If you don’t stop we owe it to the monkeys to publish your name with the local media.

Sailing Adventure

Submitted Sun 26 Apr, 2009 at 1:33 pm)
One of our most popular tours is the Sunset Sail, which offers a full afternoon of fun and activities, (or just lazing around if you prefer!) and is excellent value for money. Clients are collected at the hotel by shuttle bus, for the short journey to Playa Flamingo pier, from where the catamaran departs. This is a large, ocean-going vessel with plenty of room, comfortable shaded areas, bow trampolines, and even a stairway to provide easy access to the water. During the sail, there may be an opportunity to see dolphins racing against the bow, or seasonally-whales and their calves.
The boat moors at a secluded, beautiful cove-sheltered to provide an opportunity for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking (all equipment is provided at no extra charge). From here, you can also swim ashore and take time to explore the "desert island" beach. After you have worked up a healthy appetite, the crew serve a delicious lunch. After lunch there is more time to relax and sunbathe. In the late afternoon the captain once again sets sail in order to view the beautiful sunset from the ocean. Refreshments are provided throughout the trip, as is a delicious rum punch!
On the return to the pier, clients are transported back to the hotel in time for dinner!

Diving the Catalina Islands

Submitted Mon 23 Feb, 2009 at 7:47 pm)
Many people visit the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica to experience scuba diving or snorkelling the incredibly rich waters of the North Pacific coast. Scuba diving trips leave every morning, with boats departing from Playa Flamingo. A short boat ride, with the chance to spot dolphins, and seasonally, humpback whales takes you to the stunning Catalina Islands. A briefing from the professional dive crew informs you of the amazing variety of marine life that you may encounter on your dive-manta rays, stingrays, white tip and nurse sharks, eels, pufferfish, frog fish, nudibranchs and angel fish to name but a few. All dives are guided, and refreshments and snacks are provided. Please contact us for more information!
